Our journey with AI

Progress and next steps

Over the past months, the Fabo Learning Community has been exploring how artificial intelligence can meaningfully strengthen our platform and better support the organisations and learning teams who rely on it. At our recent community session, we shared an overview of where we are now and where we’re heading next. Here are the key point

A Fabo perspective on AI

We believe the future lies not in AI replacing human learning facilitation, but in augmenting the work of educators, community workers, and facilitators. AI can help us do more with less — but it must be guided by human values, community insight, and a strong commitment to equity.

Our approach at Fabo is to explore AI transparently, in collaboration with our members, and always ask: Does this empower more people to learn, create, and share?

Artificial Intelligence: a tool, not a replacement

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the way learning is designed, delivered, and experienced. From personalised content recommendations to automated translations and chatbot tutors, AI holds enormous promise for scaling access, improving relevance, and enhancing learner engagement.

But for NGOs — especially those working in diverse, low-resource, and rights-based contexts — the question isn’t “Should we use AI?”, but rather:

👉 “How can we use it ethically, inclusively, and in alignment with our values?”

At Fabo, we see AI as a complementary tool — not a replacement for human wisdom, empathy, or community dialogue.

Why AI matters for Fabo

Generative AI has rapidly evolved, offering new possibilities for learning, collaboration, and content creation. For Fabo members, this shift matters because:

  • AI is becoming programmable, making it easier to tailor tools to learning and humanitarian contexts.

  • Security has improved significantly, helping ensure safer use within NGO environments.

  • Energy efficiency keeps increasing, reducing environmental impact over time.

These developments open the door to responsible, context-aware uses of AI that align with Fabo’s mission: accessible, collective, empowering learning.

Opportunities we see

From the community session and our internal work, several promising opportunities are emerging:

  • Supporting editors and course creators with AI-assisted drafting, rewriting, and reviewing.

  • Improving learning workflows by helping users design activities, create briefs, or generate course structures faster.

  • Strengthening search and knowledge discovery across Fabo content through better use of embeddings (AI-powered search representations).

  • Building lightweight AI agents that can assist users with platform navigation, content guidance, or common support tasks.

All of these can reduce manual work and free members to focus more on creativity, facilitation, and meaningful engagement.

Challenge we need to navigate

Alongside the opportunities, we continue to assess:

  • Data protection and responsible use, ensuring anything we build respects privacy and ethical boundaries.

  • Consistency and quality, so AI outputs support—rather than confuse—editors and learners.

  • Clear onboarding, helping members understand when and how AI tools should be used.

These considerations are central to our implementation roadmap.

Where we are in the process

We shared a short overview of the development path:

  1. Exploration – testing prototypes with a focus on editor support.

  2. Embedding-based enhancements – improving Fabo search and knowledge access.

  3. AI agents – planning targeted agents to help users perform specific tasks inside the platform.

  4. Early demos – initial experiments illustrating how these features could look.

As always, our approach remains iterative and community-driven.

What happens next

Your input is essential. The next phase involves short testing cycles with selected user groups, gathering feedback, refining the tools, and making sure AI features support real needs across the network.

If you’d like to contribute ideas or join upcoming testing, you’re warmly invited to reach out at info@fabo.org.

Learning is a right. And when we learn together, we change the world together.
