Learning beyond organisational boundaries: the Fabo approach
What does a project manager in Uganda, a volunteer in Denmark, a humanitarian worker in South Sudan, and an advocacy officer in Nepal have in common? They all need access to practical knowledge, opportunities to learn from others, and the skills to navigate increasingly complex challenges.
Across the world, civil society organisations are generating valuable knowledge every day. They develop innovative approaches, learn from successes and setbacks, create tools and methodologies, and build expertise in areas ranging from safeguarding and project management to climate resilience, advocacy, humanitarian response, and digital transformation.
Yet much of this knowledge remains within individual organisations, accessible only to their own staff and partners. The Fabo Learning Community was created to help change that.
At the heart of Fabo is a simple belief: learning becomes more powerful when knowledge is shared.
The learning opportunities available on the platform are contributed by 30 Fabo member organisations and networks that choose to open their expertise, tools, and experiences to a broader community of learners.
A tour of Fabo's Learning opportunities
While some learning spaces remain dedicated to the needs of individual member organisations, many are made available to practitioners, volunteers, partners, and independent learners around the world.
The result is more than a collection of courses. It is a community-driven learning ecosystem where organisations learn from one another, strengthen their capacities together, and contribute to a growing body of knowledge that benefits the wider civil society sector.
Today, this shared learning ecosystem covers a wide range of themes and competencies, to strengthen individuals, teams, volunteers, and organisations across the civil society sector.
These learning opportunities can be grouped into six broad areas, each reflecting key capacities needed to create sustainable and meaningful change.
1. Strengthening organisational foundations
Fabo offers learning opportunities that support ethical and inclusive organisational cultures. Learners can explore topics such as safeguarding and PSEAH, anti-corruption, gender equality, diversity and inclusion, human rights-based approaches, codes of conduct, and whistleblower mechanisms.
These are not simply compliance requirements; they are the foundations that enable organisations to work responsibly and effectively with the communities they serve.
2. Enhancing operational and project management skills
Good intentions alone do not create impact. Projects and programmes require planning, resources, systems, and continuous learning. Fabo's operational learning pathways cover areas such as project management, MEAL, theory of change, outcome harvesting, fundraising, grants management, budgeting, financial integrity, partnership management, procurement, logistics, and risk management.
Together, these topics help organisations move from ambition to implementation while maintaining accountability and quality.
3. Deepening thematic and contextual expertise
Civil society organisations operate in environments shaped by climate change, conflict, inequality, displacement, and social transformation.
To support practitioners working in these contexts, Fabo hosts learning opportunities across a wide range of thematic areas, including human rights, advocacy, climate resilience, agroecology, environmental sustainability, humanitarian standards, community engagement, peacebuilding, conflict sensitivity, SRHR, economic empowerment, psychosocial support, food security, emergency response, and inclusion.
These learning spaces encourage participants to strengthen both their technical expertise and their understanding of the communities and contexts in which they work.
4. Investing in people and human skills
Fabo also focuses on the human side of development work. Courses and resources on facilitation, training of trainers, leadership, team management, conflict resolution, well-being, and stress management help learners strengthen the skills that make collaboration and leadership possible.
These capabilities are often the difference between a project that functions and a team that thrives.
5. Building digital and technical capacity
From digital literacy and cybersecurity to data protection, AI applications, and digital facilitation, Fabo helps learners develop the confidence and skills needed to work in an increasingly digital world.
The platform also explores how emerging technologies can support more effective project management, financial management, and knowledge sharing.
6. Supporting volunteers and partners
Fabo's learning opportunities for volunteers and partners recognise the importance of local leadership, community engagement, and collaboration. Resources on volunteer management, community-based project design, advocacy, campaigning, and partner assessment help strengthen the capacities of those closest to the challenges and opportunities within their communities.

The learning opportunities available on the Fabo platform are not created by a single organisation. They are contributed by 30 Fabo member organisations that are willing to share their skills, experiences, tools, and expertise with the wider community. It is a collaborative learning community where organisations learn from one another, avoid reinventing the wheel, and collectively strengthen the capacity of civil society.
