Digital Learning for Teachers in Refugee Camps

Spotlight on the Lutheran World Federation Educational project in refugee schools in Kenya and South Sudan

The Lutheran World Federation has been implementing an inspiring innovative e-learning solution aimed at empowering refugee teachers with key competencies in:

• Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) 
• Teaching in Crisis Contexts (TiCC).

This project, implemented in refugee schools across Kenya and South Sudan, has achieved outstanding results. 

The Journey Behind Developing the Digital Solution

Despite challenges related to low internet connectivity in these regions, the initiative incorporated creative technical solutions. For instance, the training utilised YouTube videos and offered ready-to-use solutions like templates, games, and classroom activities, which participants could easily implement.

LWF designed a dedicated space for these courses under the “Network: Lutheran World Federation” on the Fabo platform. Pre-registration ensured teachers could automatically access both the Teachers in Crisis Contexts and Social-Emotional Learning courses without landing on the general catalogue. This streamlined approach proved successful, with no complaints and seamless participation.

The courses were developed over several months, receiving constant feedback from users. This feedback was essential for expanding the content to South Sudan, where specific adaptations—particularly in visuals and pictures—were made. The content has now become flexible enough to be offered to other regions in the future.

Highlight on key Achievements and Impact

The results are remarkable:

• 363 teachers completed the Teachers in Crisis Contexts course with an average rating of 4.58 out of 5
• 230 completed the Social-Emotional Learning course earning an even higher rating of 4.66

The initiative also leveraged technology to provide teachers with internet access via mobile devices and other equipment, which not only facilitated learning but is also currently used for class management in schools.

Access to the internet in schools and camps was ensured, allowing teachers to fully engage with the course content.

A well-organised pre-course assessment with open questions and an effective feedback mechanism—consisting of closed and open-ended questions—helped refine the learning experience.

The final assessments, along with detailed feedback reports, were shared with the country teams, ensuring transparency and continuous improvement.

This initiative, with its high level of engagement and adaptability, is a testament to the transformative power of targeted teacher training.

The Lutheran World Federation’s commitment to fostering both technical and emotional competencies through digital learning on Fabo is truly inspiring, leaving a lasting positive impact on refugee education.
